Michelle Obama: First Lady, Fashion Icon
Ever since President Obama’s campaign in 2008, his wife Michelle has gotten media attention for her wardrobe choices – and for good reason. She’s a fashionable lady! No matter your political views, it’s hard to deny that the First Lady has great style – her ensembles are rarely less than perfect.
Mrs. Obama also loves to showcase the work of minority and lesser-known designers. She’s especially fond of Detroit native Tracy Reese (also a CakeStyle designer!), who has skyrocketed in popularity since the First Lady wore her custom-made silk jacquard dress during her speech at the DNC.
This dress was so popular that the designer said she had to rush to manufacture the dress to meet demands after the First Lady wore it!
Check out a few more of our favorite Michelle Obama looks (and keep an eye out for some designers that CakeStyle carries!). We also love Mrs. O, a blog dedicated to “chronicling the fashion and style of First Lady Michelle Obama.” The community there is great at finding out who designed nearly every piece Mrs. Obama wears!
Wearing Thom Browne at the DNC
The First Lady wore this lovely custom Thom Browne dress to the DNC. Browne was the 2012 winner of the National Design Award for Fashion Design, for which he was honored by none other than Michelle Obama herself. We love the gorgeous black lace overlay on this short-sleeved gray dress! Lace is a big fall trend this year.
A DVF frock for traveling
Another CakeStyle designer that Mrs. Obama wears regularly is Diane Von Furstenberg, who designed this gorgeous floral wrap dress. The First Lady finished the look with a pink cardigan and yellow flats.
Campaigning in Tracy Reese
We love this bold black-and-white floral dress by Tracy Reese, especially paired with Mrs. Obama’s signature Alaia belt and a double strand of pearls. It’s perfect for campaigning!
Honoring the troops in Michael Kors
Showcasing another of this year’s trends while honoring fallen US Army Specialist Leslie H. Sabo, Jr., the First Lady wore a red pleated Michael Kors crewneck dress paired with a wide red belt. This is a perfect example of how pleating can be beautiful!
A Naeem Khan gown for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner
For the formal White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Michelle Obama donned a Naeem Khan strapless paisley organza gown and paired it with Carla Amorim hoop earrings (rose gold with crinoline and orange sapphires – perfection). We love how she skipped a necklace to draw attention to her gown and earrings!
Style runs in the family
For the Easter Egg Roll at the White House, all three Obama ladies embraced the same hot trends: bright colors and color blocking! Bold jeans, shoes, tanks, and cardigans made these three stand out in a crowd.
Mother’s Day in Rachel Roy
The First Lady rocked another CakeStyle designer, Rachel Roy, for the Mother’s Day Joining Forces event at the White House. This lovely yellow frock, with its draped neckline and metallic brocade skirt, is the perfect outfit for a sunny spring day.
